basel, the swiss city on the rhine, became in the 50s and 60s the meeting place for young typographers and designers from various countries, mainly due to ruder's work and personality. the teachers of the basel school developed an asymmetric typography, a typography which, through its natural simplicity, appears elegant and timeless even today.

'the road to basel' attempts to document this creative period of modern typography. students of emil ruder, including karl gerstner, hans-rudolf lutz, marcel nebel, roy cole, fridolin mueller and harry boller reminisce, show their work from the basel period and compare it to works which influenced them.

the design of the book tries to visualize the almost invisible transition from the orderly to organic typography. the grid, which gave swiss typography, rightly and wrongly, a bad name, is overplayed by a flexible typography. column width, typesizes, leading vary. the design developed on virgin white double-page spreads from content.
